Spheres of all sizes offer a satisfying symmetry that designers love to celebrate.

There is something balancing about a perfect sphere; as if by looking at it, all the world is put to rights. Our minds are wired to associate beauty with symmetry, so it is little wonder that with no edges or vertices to distract us, we are drawn to flawless rounds of gold.

Jewelry designers are compelled to work with spheres for a number of reasons. For those who enjoy geometric design, there is no purer form to celebrate. And for jewelers captivated by all things celestial, such shapes can bring to mind planets in orbit (although in truth, only the sun is close to being a perfect sphere).

Spherical motifs work well when making an impact, adding scale to designs. This is particularly effective in statement earrings or cocktail rings. Highly polished gold orbs can create a hypnotic mirrorlike effect. They can also be used as a base for a peacock-like display of gem-setting prowess, be it mystery, snow or pavé. Nor should the negative space within spheres be forgotten, as it can make for a perfect secret compartment.
For a subtler but deliciously tactile take on the sphere trend, there is gold granulation or gold ball chain. Big or small, the sublime symmetry of spheres is in.
