This gemologist-trained designer makes her jewelry sing by mixing pavé technique with forms drawn from nature.

Originally from Chandigarh in northern India, Pavit Gujral draws inspiration from nature, her extensive travels and memories. A graduate of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the designer says she aspires to be a “pop star” in the world of jewelry. In 2020 Gujral won the Saul Bell Design Award for two creations – her Dancing Fish collection won first place in the Jewelry Collection Bridge/Fashion category and she was awarded second place for her Coral ring in the Gold and Platinum category.

Here the designer discusses her sources of inspiration and latest collections.

What are your latest creations about?
I am currently working on two new collections, a men’s jewelry line and La Fleur collection. I felt the need to bring to India the trend for men’s jewelry and accessories. The collection includes funky shirt buttons, cufflinks, rings, brooches and bracelets. The La Fleur collection, as the name suggests, takes its inspiration from flower blossoms. It is a whimsical collection that can be worn on multiple occasions.

How do you describe your style?
My style is best described as pieces that make a statement. I believe that every piece should be unique and should stand out in a crowd. The pavé setting is something you can see in all my pieces. I especially use the micro-pavé technique to minimize the look of metal. Being a gemologist, my aim is to educate people and emphasize the trend of semi-precious-colored stones in jewelry. I also love using phenomenal gemstones like moonstones, rutilated quartz and opals, as well as rare and valuable stones like Paraiba tourmaline and padparadscha sapphire.

What are your most iconic jewels?
The Dancing Fish necklace and Black Forest collection won awards in the US and in India. The Al Maha brooch from the men’s line is another fabulous piece. The Crab earrings are one of my personal favorites.

What are your main sources of inspiration?
Nature, animals and architecture. Inspiration is everywhere!

What’s next?
To go international, win more awards and have a presence in the Middle East and Europe.
