Olga Oleksenko, founder of the Strong & Precious art foundation, discusses her native country’s rich ornamental traditions and vibrant contemporary scene.

Most jewelry lovers are familiar with the name and legacy of Joseph Marshak (1854-1918), whose work became synonymous with exceptional Ukrainian craftsmanship. The jeweler had established such a strong network of workshops and boutiques in the capital city that neither Carl Fabergé nor Cartier succeeded in opening a store in Ukraine during his lifetime. Marshak cemented his reputation with international awards and exhibitions.

The “Kyiv Cartier” is a role model for Olga Oleksenko, who founded Strong & Precious in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of her home country. Her art foundation champions Ukrainian jewelry artists through exhibitions such as GemGenève in Switzerland and events including the New York City Jewelry Week.

In this new episode of the Jewelry Connoisseur Podcast, Florida-based Oleksenko looks back to the origins of ornamentation in Ukraine, highlighting iconic motifs and jewels. She also shares how pioneering Marshak was, and she links this storied heritage to the contemporary designers she represents.

“The jewelry industry in Ukraine is led by very talented people. We don’t want that war to take away their future. We want our jewelers to have an opportunity to work and develop in their country,” notes the jewelry insider.
