Beth Bernstein discusses her latest book on how to appreciate and purchase pieces from the Georgian period through Art Deco.

The explosion of the antique and vintage jewelry market in recent years has a clear trigger, says Beth Bernstein, author, journalist and jewelry collector with 25 years of experience. “Even going to all the shows…I still have never seen so much jewelry as on Instagram and social media,” she explains. Bernstein believes the uptick in interest in collecting jewelry is related to the great learning potential Instagram offers. “Once people started to learn more about antique jewelry, the field just opened up,” she tells Rapaport Editor in Chief Sonia Esther Soltani in the latest episode of the Jewelry Connoisseur Podcast.

The author of The Modern Guide to Antique Jewellery discusses her own journey as a collector as well as her favorite jewelry styles. She delves into many topics: from the different periods of jewelry history to how to mix antique and modern pieces. While reflecting on her own story, Bernstein dispenses advice to those who want to start collecting. “You should never buy jewelry that you’re not going to wear. Jewelry is not meant to sit in the safe. It’s meant to be worn,” she remarks.

In her new book, published this year by ACC Art Books, Bernstein talks to dealers all around the world about different styles and presents not only her own voice but also their opinions on various periods and pieces.
