Award-winning writer and curator Melanie Grant explains the criteria aficionados of wearable art should have in mind when looking for their pieces.

“Can jewelry be art?” asked Melanie Grant in her book, Coveted, a must-have for any jewelry lover and aspiring collector. Grant is an award-winning writer and the luxury editor at The Economist’s 1843 Magazine. Her book, as she relates, “came out of 20 years of real [jewelry-collecting] obsession.”

Jewelry “can be art at the very top level, when it’s rare, unique, handmade and makes you feel something. It tends to change you when it comes into your life,” Grant explains.

In this episode of the Jewelry Connoisseur Podcast, Grant gives invaluable advice to jewelry collectors who are starting their journey and suggests some contemporary designers to follow. “A good place to start are designers like Capucine Huguet, Jacqueline Rabun, Joy BC, Nicholas Lieou and Lola Fenhirst. You could probably approach them with a half-decent budget and get something completely original,” she says.

Last year, Grant created a statement cuff for an exhibition at the Elisabetta Cipriani Gallery in London, becoming a jewelry artist herself. “It was a nice process, but a terrifying experience also. And it’s still quite scary to even wear it because it’s like having your heart out there,” she shares.
