Michael Robinson of David Michael Jewels recounts the artistic career that took him from designing mainstream creations to museum-worthy pieces.

In this episode of the Jewelry Connoisseur Podcast we explore with Michael Robinson the difference between jewelry as a product and as an art form.
“With jewelry, we have to be careful about what is art and what is a product. If you’re taking shortcuts [to make] things easier, quicker, or cheaper, then you’re making a product,” shares the designer and co-owner of David Michael Jewels.

Robinson’s training started early in his father’s jewelry store and workshop in Australia, where he learned the ropes of the trade. For a couple of decades, he specialized in custom work and designing engagement rings. The past 10 years have seen David Michael Jewels emerge on the international scene of jewelry artists with creations that take thousands of hours to realize and are made entirely by hand.

Robinson’s jewels have been showcased by auction house Sotheby’s as well as at prestigious antiques dealer Stephen Russell in New York.
